Another thread reminded me of this.

Whilst I was travelling round the globe at the comfort of my own computer, being nosy rofl, I found an article by a blogger giving insider info on Affiliate programs and the best ones to use etc.

But, thats not my point lol. I was trying to figure out how affiliate links work, so I found out its some sort of cookie system.

So, if anyone knows, I have a few questions:

- What if you have clicked mutiple affiliate links in the past, and the company you are about to purchase from is an "always" or "forever" or something cookie, whom does it give the affiliate rewards to, the person whom first sent your computer to that site, or the person whose affiliate link you just clicked through right then to get there?

- If you are already signed up and have purchased from the company in the past, but now used the affiliate link to get there, will it still give that person the rewards?

- Are we affiliated with any sites that are just "per click through"?

- What if I already have stuff in my cart, and then use the affiliate link to go through and checkout?

And more similar questions I can't think of for the moment. Maybe there should be a section that explains the warranties (for lack of a better term) of each of the affiliate programs we have. For instance, I know some have limited hours or day from point of clickthrough till sale, so does that mean if you used the AF link today to look through and the site had a 24hr clickthrough, then in 3 days time you used the AF link again, this time to purchase stuff, since that IP has already used that link and its "expired" for them, that no rewards come there way?

Sorry, its a bit of a mind dump, but trying to understand everything better so I don't make a boo-boo :p

Depends on the cookies each affiliate program use as to how long the "click through" lasts. Most last some where between 24-48 hours. Although we've had different experiences - Sequential Spelling gave us an affiliate payment once, even though we weren't signed up for an 'official' affiliate program because some one bought from them after visiting them via a link from us which wasn't even an affiliate link!!! I thought that was pretty nice of them.

Motivated Moms if you visit via the affiliate link first but then 24 hrs later via the regular link will still remember that we sent you and pay us the affiliate payment (e-junkie is their affiliate system).

Mostly what I do is actually bookmark the affiliate link, like for Book Depository and keep that in my bookmarks, favourites so that I'm always using that link and never have to worry about it expiring or always having to worry about coming back here every time I want to use a link.

At this stage it would take quite a long time to go through all of the t's and c's of each of the affiliate programs we are signed up with to find out how long each of the cookies last, so I'll have to get back to you on that one!
