On this forum it is called 'view new content" and 'view active content" and they allow you to see the latest posts in forums, blogs, gallery and downloads, so are very versatile. This is the link to viewing new content:

This is the link found on the upper right hand side of the web page underneath the search box and next to the RSS symbol.
By default "View new content" uses the last visit time to check for new topics so when that time is updated you "loose" topics from the results.
Also make sure you check your settings in your own user profile.
Under your name (top right) in the drop down menu choose "my settings".
Scroll down to the bottom of the page that comes up (it's the general settings page). There is an option for search settings. Under "view new content method" there are two options. One is "show me all the content I haven't read". The other option is "show me all new content since my last visit". Choose which one is the one you prefer. This will change what get's displayed in the "active content" link here:

Note - the active content only shows posts that have been made in the past 24 hours. It will show any forums that have new posts but have been read by you as greyed out folders.
New content does not display anything when you have read everything previously.

If you scroll right down to the bottom you can see on one of the dark blue bars some links to active content, top posters and more. It's quite hidden sadly.
However, what I have done is to bookmark the link and I just click on that bookmark when I want to see the latest content.
Note that again from here you can see the latest members to join, latest links and more by clicking on the menu tabs to the right of the word "forums" on the dark blue bar (NOT the links underneath the photo banner at the top of the page).
Also, if you scroll to the bottom of this page, in the bottom right hand corner on the second to last dark blue bar, you will see an option for changing the viewing period. So you can change from viewing active content int he last 24 hours, to last week, right through to year (and it will display it all in order of last post).
It's a little bit awkward to get your head around to start with but once you figure out which links to use, it does work nicely. Promise!
